Edward Burgess of Monongalia Co., (West) Virginia

Edward Burgess was born about 1751, according to his Revolutionary War pension record. He may have married Margaret Thompson on 25 June 1781 in Prince George’s Co., Maryland. He is perhaps listed in the 1790 census for Montgomery Co., Maryland (there are two Edward Burgesses in the county, one having no slaves, and the other 19 slaves; the latter individual is more likely to be connected to the wealthy family of Col. William Burgess; the rich Edward continues to be listed in Montgomery Co. in 1800; the 1790 listing shows two males over the age of 16, and one under the age of 16), and is certainly listed in the 1810-20 censuses for Fayette Co., Pennsylvania (with no sons in either census), and in 1830 in Monongalia Co., (West) Virginia (aged 70-80 years, with one boy aged 10-15); he is also listed in the personal property tax lists of Monongalia Co. from 1822-32. He is listed in the 1810-30 censuses next door to James Burgess, his presumed son. Edward served as a Private in the Continental Army from Maryland during the Revolutionary War, and received a pension in 1823; this was transferred to Monongalia Co. in 1825. According to his pension application in March of 1822, his wife’s name was Margaret, and he was then aged seventy. He died in Monongalia Co. on 29 August 1832, having had at least one son:

James Burgess Sr. was born about 1788 in Maryland (or in Virginia, according to the 1860 census). His wife’s name is unknown. He is listed in the 1810-20 censuses for Upper Marlborough, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, with Edward Burgess (his presumed father) (in 1810 he has one son under the age of 10, and in 1820 five sons under the of 10), and in 1830-40 in Stewartstown, Eastern District, Monongalia Co., (West) Virginia (in 1830 he has one son aged 20-30, one aged 15-20, two aged 10-15, one aged 5-10, and two under the age of 5); he is listed there with his son James Jr. in 1860, but has not been found in 1850; he is listed on the personal property tax lists of Monongalia Co. in 1822, 1825, and 1832-44. He died on 7 June 1867 in Allamakee Co., Iowa, having had at least five sons:

He is listed in the 1840-50 censuses for Monongalia Co., (West) Virginia, and in 1860 in Allamakee Co., Iowa; he is listed in the personal property tax lists of Monongalia Co. from 1832-50. He died there after 1860, having had two sons:

Charles Henry Burgess was born 29 February 1812 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania. He married Barbara Miller about 1830. He is listed in the 1850-60 censuses for Monongalia Co., (West) Virginia. He died 18 February 1888 in Allamakee Co., Iowa, having had one son:

James Burgess Jr. was born 21 December 1815 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania. He married Mary Jenkins on 3 March 1840 in Monongalia Co., (West) Virginia. He is listed in the 1840 and 1860 censuses for Monongalia Co., in 1850 census for Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, and in 1870 in Allamakee Co., Iowa. He died there on 22 February 1869, having had two sons:
