Austin Burgess of Laclede Co., Missouri

[Haplotype R-M269, Genetic Group: C1-C8 Pittsylvania and Montgomery ]

Austin Burgess, also called Auzy BurgessAuzzy BurgessAuzey BurgessAuza Burgess, and Ozzy Burgess, was born about 1774 in Maryland (according to the 1850 and 1880 censuses); no record has been found showing him with the name Austin Burgess, but the fact that his grandson was named for him and used a similar nickname, suggests very strongly that Austin was his original given name. He may be an unrecorded son of William Burgess of Montgomery Co., Maryland. He married Mary __ about 1805 (she was born about 1788 in North Carolina). He is listed in the 1820-40 censuses for Dickson Co., Tennessee (in 1820 with one son aged 10-16 and one under the age of 10, in 1830 with one son aged 15-20, one 5-10, and one under the age of 5, and in 1840 with one son aged 10-15), and in 1850 in Laclede Co., Missouri; he has not been found in any earlier census, but it should be noted that the early censuses of Georgia are missing. He apparently died in Laclede Co. between 1850-60, having had four sons:

1. Son (1806?- )
2. Elisha Burgess (1813-1880+) of Laclede Co., MO
3. Son (1823?- )
4. Montgomery Bell Burgess (1827 TN-1860+) of Shannon Co., MO; he married Frances Ann Tolbert on 8 July 1849 in Laclede Co., MO, and had two sons, James T. (born April 1850), and William (born 1854); he is listed there in the 1850 census with his father, and as “Martin Burgess” in the 1860 census for Shannon Co., MO, but neither he nor any other members of his family have not been found thereafter

Second Branch: Elisha Burgess

Elisha Burgess was born about 1811 in Georgia, according to the 1880 census. He married Elizabeth B. Jones on 11 June 1832 in Dickson Co., Tennessee (she was born about 1814 in Tennessee). He is listed in the 1840 census for Dickson Co., with one son aged 5-10 and one under the age of 5, and in 1850-60 and 1880 in Laclede Co., Missouri; he is listed in Camden Co., Missouri, in 1870. He obtained a land grant of 160 acres on 1 November 1859 in Camden Co., Missouri. He apparently died in Laclede Co. after 1880, having had five sons:

1. Austin Field Burgess, also called Auzi Burgess and Auzy Burgess (1833-1910), of Laclede Co., MO; his death certificate calls him “Austerfield Burgess,” with parents “Lish” Burgess and Elizabeth Jones; he married Louisa M. Holloway in 1863 in Laclede Co., MO, and secondly Margaret E. Holden on 19 May 1894 in Laclede Co.; he is buried in the Stoutland Cemetery
2. John M. Burgess (1838-1891) of Laclede Co., MO
3. Thomas Burgess (1841-1866) of Laclede Co., MO; he married Juanita Adaline Cummins in 1860
4. Elisha M. Burgess (1849 AL-1887) of Laclede Co., MO; he married Julia A. Davis on 17 August 1879
5. James E. Burgess (1854-1944) of Laclede Co., MO

Second Son of Elisha

John M. Burgess was born about 1838 in Dickson Co., Tennessee. He married Minerva (or Manerva) Young about 1865 (she was born about 1843 in Missouri). He served as a Corporal in Co. D, 48th Missouri Infantry, and in Co. G, 45th Missouri Infantry, Union Army, during the Civil War, and was awarded a disability pension (which his wife also received after his death). He is listed in the 1870-80 censuses for Laclede Co., Missouri; his widow appears as head of the family there in 1900. He died in Laclede Co. in 1891 (or on 3 January 1898, the date of death noted on his military tombstone order), and is buried in the Holman Cemetery. He had three sons:

1. John Henry Burgess (1872-1938) of Jasper Co., MO
2. Marion Thomas Burgess (1875-1957) of Laclede Co., MO, buried Stoutland Cemetery
3. Jesse Theodore Burgess (1881-1933) of Laclede Co., MO, buried Honey Cemetery
