Lorenzo Dow Burgess I was born about 1805 (or 1810) in Virginia (his year of birth is variously stated); he was named for Lorenzo Dow (1777-1834), an itinerant preacher who attained great popularity in the U.S., beginning with his initial tour through the South in 1803. He married firstly Harriet Curtis on 27 March 1828 in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee (she probably died by 1840), and secondly as her second husband Sarah Ann “Sallie” or “Sarabet” Robinson (or Roberson) Hewitt, widow of Wilkerson (or Wilki[n]son) Hewitt [whom she had married on 2 July 1833 in Adams Co., Missouri—he died on 16 July 1851 in Pottawattamie Co., Iowa], having had by him she had at least six children), on 20 March 1853 in Mills Co., Iowa (she was born on 9 April 1816 in Virginia, and died on 8 March 1890 at Dexter, Dallas Co., Iowa [next to Guthrie Co.], being buried in the Dexter Cemetery). Lorenzo worked as a blacksmith. He is listed in the 1830 census for Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee, in the 1840 census for Patrick Co., Virginia (living by himself), in 1850 and 1870 in St. Charles, St. Charles Co., Missouri, in the 1854 and 1856 state censuses for Pottawattamie Co., Iowa (he moved there in 1852, according to the 1856 census), and in 1860 for Sarpy Co., Nebraska Territory. His widow remarried William Barnett on 5 October 1879 in Guthrie Co., Iowa, and is listed there in Penn Township in the 1880 census, and twice there in the 1885 state census; she is earlier listed with her first husband in the 1840 census for Hancock Co., Illinois, and from 1850-51 in Pottawattamie Co., Iowa. Lorenzo Burgess died between 1870-79, probably in Iowa, having had two daughters by his first wife (including Sarah, born about 1834 in Virginia); by his second wife he had one daughter, Tennessee Helena (born about 1855 in Iowa), and one son:

He married Susanna “Anna” Wakeley on 24 August 1884 in Guthrie Co., Iowa (she was born on 9 March 1857 in Iowa, and died on 2 January 1938). He is listed in the 1880 census with his mother and stepfather, in the 1885 state census for Guthrie Co., Iowa, in the 1900 census for Polk Co., Iowa, in the 1905 state census for Guthrie Co., Iowa, in 1910 in Lincoln, Lancaster Co., Nebraska, and in 1920 in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska; his widow (so noted) is listed as head of the family in 1930 in Lincoln, Lancaster Co., Nebraska.
