John Burgess was born about 1774 in North Carolina. He married Rodia __ about 1803. He may be related to the Matthew Burgess (an uncommon name for the period) who lived in Burke Co., North Carolina, and Greenville Co., South Carolina, and also to the Carter Burgess who lived in Greenville Co. He may be listed in the 1810 census for Halifax Co., North Carolina, with one son aged 10-16, and four sons under the age of 10. He may be the John “Bridges” listed in the 1820 census for Rutherford Co., with three sons aged 10-16 and three under the age of 10—or a second time with two sons aged 16-26, two aged 16-18, two aged 10-16, and two under the age of 10. He is listed in the 1830 census for Rutherford Co., North Carolina, with three sons aged 15-20, two sons aged 10-15, one son aged 5-10, and one son under 5, with John aged 50-60 years; and in 1850 in Cleveland Co., North Carolina, living with his son Thomas; he has not been found in 1840. He apparently died there in the 1850s, having had seven sons:

Second Branch: Henry C. Burgess

Henry C. Burgess Sr. (also called Henry Colmon Burgess Sr.) was born about 1805 in North Carolina. He married Adra Hardin on 8 February 1825 in Rutherford Co., North Carolina. He is listed in the 1850 census for Cleveland Co., North Carolina, next door to his brother, Thomas, and in 1860 in Whitfield Co., Georgia. He apparently died there in 1868, having had five sons:

2. (Olmon) Milton Burgess (listed as Milford Burgess in the 1850 census) (1829-1854)
3. (Ivirson) Carter Burgess (1831-1882) of Pope Co., AR

Ivirson Carter Burgess is the ancestor of G. J. Burgess.
Ivirson Carter Burgess is the ancestor of  R. Lewis
