David Burgess was born about 1823 in Spartanburg Co., South Carolina. He may be related to the Carter Burgess and Thomas Burgess who lived in adjoining Greenville Co., South Carolina. He married Nora “Norma” Rebecca Littlefield about 1844 in DeKalb Co., Alabama. He is listed in 1850 census in Tippah Co., Mississippi, and from 1860-80 in Hardeman Co., Tennessee (in 1880 he indicates that both parents were born in South Carolina). He died in Hardeman Co. in 1898, having had six sons:

2. Asa Burgess (1849-1896+) of Tippah Co., MS
3. Charles Henry Burgess (1853-1929) of Hardeman Co., TN
4. Allen Kendall Burgess (1854-1910+) of Hardeman Co., TN
5. Abraham Lincoln Burgess (1862-1924) of Shelby Co., TN
6. Ulessis Burgess (1864-1885) of Hardeman Co., TN, died childless?

Allen Kendall Burgess is the ancestor of J. B. Burgess.
Abraham Lincoln Burgess is the ancestor of B. D. Burgess

Test results received from one representative of this line match those of a descendant of John Burgess of Rutherford Co., North Carolina, a nearby county; they have a common Burgess ancestor, name unknown. However, they do not currently match the numbers of any other Burgess Project family.
