Joseph Burgess Sr., also called Joseph Drury Burgess Sr., was born about 1748 in Ireland, possibly in County Antrim. He married Margaret Armstrong by 1773. He immigrated to North Carolina after 1781, and either served as a Private for thirty-six months in the Revolutionary War, or bought a Revolutionary War land warrant. On 27 July 1785 he received a land grant of 274 acres in Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina, which he promptly sold. He has not been found in the 1790 census, but is listed in the 1800 census for the Sumter District, South Carolina, with one son aged 10-16, and one aged 16-26. He apparently died there by 1810, having had four sons:

First Branch: Andrew Burgess

 

Andrew Burgess was born 14 January 1774 in County Antrim, Ireland. He immigrated to the United States with his father after 1781. He married Rachel McDonald White about 1820, possibly in Sumter Co., South Carolina. He is listed in the 1830-40 censuses for Sumter Co.; Rachel appears as head of the family in 1850. He died there on 17 May 1850, having had four sons:

First Son of Andrew

                                     

William R. Burgess Sr. was born in 1821 in Sumter Co., South Carolina. He married Anne E. R. Bradham about 1848, and secondly Vermel McDonald about 1862. He is listed in the 1850 census for Sumter Co., and from 1860-70 in Clarendon Co., South Carolina; his widow appears as head of the family there in 1880. He served as a Probate Judge. He died there on 5 February 1878, having had four sons, one by his first wife, and three by his second:

Third Branch: Joseph Drury Burgess Jr.

 

Joseph Drury Burgess Jr. (also called Drury Burgess) was born about 1781 in Ireland (reportedly in County Antrim). He married Jane __ about 1805. He is listed in the 1810-30 censuses for the Sumter District, South Carolina (in 1810 he has one son under the age of 10, in 1820 no sons, and in 1830 one son under the age of 5 and one aged 5-10), and from 1840-60 in Monroe Co., Alabama (in 1840 he has 1 son aged 5-10, and two aged 10-15). He apparently died in Monroe Co. about 1869, having had at least three sons:

Andrew J(ackson?) Burgess was born about 1822 in the Sumter District, South Carolina. He married Anny Holly about 1847. He is listed in the 1850 census for Monroe Co., Alabama. He died there in 1858, having had three sons:

2. Andrew H. Burgess (1850?- )
3. Edwin Burl Burgess (1857-1926) of Escambia Co., FL
