John Burgess was born about 1827 in Delaware, according to the 1850 census; in the 1860 census his apparent widow has a farmhand named James Burgess living with her—this is presumably John’s older brother, who never married; in the 1850 census James is living with an older woman named Martha Burgess, presumably the mother of both boys; an older John Burgess, with wife Mary, also appears in this section of New Castle Co. John married Hannah Ann McDornim or McDornin on 20 February 1850 in the Pencader Hundred section, New Castle Co., Delaware. He is listed in the 1850 census for New Castle Co., Delaware; his wife appears there as head of the family in 1860; Hannah remarried William Hays, and is listed with him in the 1870 census for New Castle Co., with two of her daughters, and a hitherto unknown son named William Burgess. John apparently died about 1860, having had two sons:

Only Son of John Burgess: Robert T. Burgess

Robert Thomas Burgess Sr. was born about 1851 in New Castle Co., Delaware. He married Annie E. Callahan Barlow on 19 September 1871 at Wilmington, New Castle Co., Delaware (she was born 14 January 1855 at Cherry Hill, MD, and died on 18 January 1941 at Baltimore, MD). He worked as a blacksmith. He is listed in the 1880 census for Cecil Co., Maryland; his widow (so noted) appears in the 1900 census for New Castle Co., Delaware; she later settled in Baltimore, MD. He apparently died in New Castle Co. about 1899 (his estate was probated in 1901), having had six sons:

One of Robert T. Burgess’s sons may be the ancestor of D. H. Reed.
