George Burgess of Northampton Co., North Carolina

George Burgess (also known as George Washington Burgess) was born 3 July 1822 in North Carolina, possibly the son of Nathaniel Burgess and his wife, Elizabeth Jenkins (an Elizabeth Burgess is listed in the 1840 census for Northampton Co.), and possibly the grandson of Robert Burgess and his wife Tamer. He married (Nancy) Ann Flythe on 25 August 1846 in Northampton Co., North Carolina. He is listed in the 1850 census for Northampton Co.; his wife is listed there as head of the family in 1860, living with John Flythe. He may have served in the Civil War, and also worked as a cooper. He either died or disappeared during the Civil War (according to a family story, he abandoned his wife and moved to Franklin, Virginia), having had three sons:

Second Branch: Levi George Washington Burgess

 

Levi George Washington Burgess was born 20 June 1849 in Northampton Co., North Carolina. He married Sally Nelson in 1871, and secondly Charity Nelson in 1874. He is listed with William Flythe in the 1860 census for Northampton Co., and with his family there from 1870-1920. He died in Northampton Co. on 2 February 1926, having had eight sons:

8. Noah Burgess (1885-1946)

 

Levi More Burgess is the ancestor of J. T. Burgess.
