Ephraim Burgess Sr. was born March 1812 (according to the 1900 census), or 1820 (according to the 1870 census) in Halifax Co., North Carolina (according to his son Jack’s death certificate). He married Frances Hawkins about 1845. He is listed in the 1870-1900 censuses for Halifax Co., North Carolina, but has not been identified in any earlier census. He died there between 1900-10, having had at least six sons:

2. Frank Burgess (1853?-1936) of Halifax Co., NC
3. Ephraim Burgess Jr. (1859?- ) of Halifax Co., NC
4. Harland Burgess (1860?- ) of Halifax Co., NC
5. Lee Burgess (1861?- ) of Halifax Co., NC
6. Grant Burgess (1864?-1900+) of Halifax Co., NC

Jack Burgess is the ancestor of A. J. Burgess.
