Joseph Burgess was born about 1820 in New York. He married Jane M. __ about 1848. He is listed in the 1850 census for Westchester Co., New York, and in 1860 in Bergen Co., New Jersey. He worked as a blacksmith. He apparently died in Bergen Co. about 1862, having had two sons:

 

1. William D. Burgess  (1851-1927) of Sullivan Co., PA
2. John Henry Burgess (1857?-1910+) died childless

 
 

William D. Burgess is the ancestor of G. B. Burgess.

Test results received from one representative of this family match the markers of descendants of John Burgess of New Haven Co., Connecticut, and James Burgess of Sussex Co., England; they have a common Burgess ancestor, name unknown.
