John Burgess was born about 1683. He married Mary Tyler on 28 November 1709 at Branford, New Haven Co., Connecticut. He died after 1748, having had four sons:

1. Comfort Burgess (1709-~1761)  
2. John Burgess Jr. (1713- 1794)  
3. James Burgess (1716-1789) of New Haven Co., CT
4. Benjamin Burgess  (1721- )

James Burgess was born 9 February 1715/16 O.S., probably in Connecticut. He married Sarah Tyler widow of Daniel Dunk on 21 June 1744 at Branford, New Haven Co., Connecticut. He died on 9 February 1789 at Washington, Litchfield Co., having had four sons:

1. James Burgess Jr. (1745-1815)  
2. Ezra Burgess  (1747- )  
3. Ebenezer Burgess (1749-1825) of Litchfield Co., CT
4. Nathan Burgess (1752~1789)  

 

James Burgess Jr. is the ancestor of R. Burgess
James Burgess Jr. is the ancestor of W. Burgess
Ebenezer Burgess is the ancestor of L. A. Burgess.

Test results received from one representative of this family match the markers of descendants of Joseph Burgess of Bergen Co., New Jersey, and James Burgess of Sussex Co., England; they have a common Burgess ancestor, name unknown.
