John Burgar Sr. was born about 1742, possibly in the Shetland Islands, Dunrossness Co., Scotland. He may be a brother or cousin of Robert Burgar of London, England. He married Catherine Fitkin on 12 December 1776 at St. Giles Parish, Cripplegate, London. He is listed in 1775-79, 1783, and 1791 Poor Rate Assessments of St. Leonards, Shoreditch, London. He died in 1797 at London, England, according to his son John III’s diary, having had seven sons:
1. John Burgar Jr. (1777-1778), died young
2. Walter Burgar (1778-1783), died young
3. Andrew Burgar (1782-1783), died young
4. John Burgar III (1787-1816) of London, England; extinct in the male line
5. Walter Burgar I (1789-1832+) of London, England; died childless
6. William Burgar (1792-1854); died childless

Joseph Burgar was born on 25 January 1794 at Bishopsgate, London, England. He was apprenticed on 28 September 1809 to his brother, John Burgar, to learn the art of shoemaking (a family profession). He married Susannah Pearse on 4 February 1828 at St. Sepulchre Parish, London. He is listed in the 1836 Pigots Commercial Directory, and in the 1841-51 censuses for London, England. He died on 14 September 1854 at St. Bartholomews Hospital, London, having had four sons:
1. Joseph Charles Burgar (1832-1845), died young
2. Walter Burgar II (1834-1897) of London, England
3. Alfred Burgar (1839-1917) of London, England
4. John Burgar IV (1842-1878) of London, England; extinct in the male line
