John Burgess Sr. was born between 1765-75, possibly in North Carolina. He may have married Mary “Polly” __ about 1796 in North Carolina (she was born about 1777 in North Carolina, and died after 1860 in Humphreys Co., Tennessee). He may be listed in the 1800-10 censuses for Warren Co., North Carolina (in 1800 with one son and one daughter under the age of 10, and in 1810 with one son aged 10-16, and two under the age of 10); he is certainly listed in 1820 in Humphreys Co., Tennessee, with two sons aged 10-16 and two under the age of 10; his presumed widow is listed as head of the family in the 1830 census in Dickson Co., TN (with one son aged 10-15, and two aged 5-10), and in 1840 in Humphreys Co. (with no sons); in 1850 she is living with her son, Plummer, and in 1860 with Martha Dodson, a presumed daughter. John Sr. apparently died in Humphreys Co. about 1825, having had at least six sons:

Plummer Willis (a Revolutionary War soldier) of Warren Co., NC, and Robertson Co., TN; he is listed in the 1837-38 and 1842 tax lists for Humphreys Co., and in the 1840-50 censuses there; died childless

Fourth Branch: Alexander A. Burgess

Alexander A. Burgess was born about 1815 in North Carolina; his middle name may be Alfred. He married Indiana Wilson about 1840. He is listed in the 1838 tax list for Humphreys Co. (either as A. A. Burgess or as Ellick A. Burgess, or both), and in the 1840-50 censuses there; his widow appears as head of the family in 1860. He died about 1854 in Humphreys Co., having had three sons:

1. Andrew J(ackson?) Burgess (1846-1920+) of Humphreys Co., TN
2. James Burgess II (1848- ) of Humphreys Co., TN
3. Alfred Alexander Burgess (1854-1936) of Collin Co., TX

Fifth Branch: John Burgess Jr.

John Burgess Jr. was born about 1820 in Tennessee (according to the 1850 census), or in 1819 in Kentucky (according to the 1860 census). He married (Elizabeth) Phoebe Watkins on 29 December 1839 in Dickson Co., Tennessee. He is listed in the 1842 tax list of Humphreys Co., next door to Plummer Burgess, and in the 1850-60 censuses there. He and his wife died in a smallpox epidemic there about 1862, having had three sons:

1. Alfred Henderson Burgess (1848?-1928) of Dickson Co., TN
2. Robert William Burgess (or Robert Whitwell Burgess) (1858?- )
3. Pleasant Gotchie Burgess (or Pleasant Goochie Burgess or Gotchie Burgess) (1860-1910+) of Humphreys Co., TN

Alfred Henderson Burgess is the ancestor of R. F. Burgess; Alfred Alexander Burgess is the ancestor of I. J. Burgess III.

Test results received from two representatives in this line exactly match each other; they have a common ancestor, John Burgess Sr. They do not currently match the numbers of any other Burgess Project family.
