Josiah Burgess of Telfair Co., Georgia

Josiah Burgess, called “Sameul Josire Burgiss [sic], age 100 years old” on his tombstone (in the Sand Hill or Bethlehem Methodist Church Cemetery, Telfair Co., Georgia), but in no other record, was born about 1766 in Virginia (according to the 1850 census). He married his first wife (name unknown) about 1800, and secondly Margaret __. He is listed with his wife in the 1800 census for the Darlington District, South Carolina, with no children, and in the 1810 census in the Kershaw District, South Carolina, with four sons under the age of ten; he may be listed in the 1820 census for Franklin Co., Tennessee. By the 1820s he was living in Laurens Co., Georgia, but is listed in the 1830-50 censuses for Dooly Co., Georgia. He died about 1856 in Telfair Co., Georgia, having had four sons:

4. Stephen T. Burgess (1808- )

 

First Branch: Dillard Burgess

 

Dillard Burgess was born about 1801 in the Kershaw District, South Carolina. He married Annis Cannon or Aness Cannon about 1833 in Dooly Co., Georgia. He is listed in the 1840 census for Dooly Co., Georgia, in 1850 in Sumter Co., Georgia, and in 1860 in Thomas Co., Georgia. He died between 1860-70 in Brooks Co., Georgia, having had five sons:

3. James Madison Burgess (1843-1923) of Colquit Co., GA
4. Stephen G. Burgess (1847- )
5. Robert Burgess (1850- )

 

Dillard Burgess is the ancestor of C. W. Burgess.
