Jonathan Burgess of Jackson Co., Alabama

[Haplotype R - M269]

Jonathan Burgess, also called Jonathan Milton Burgess Sr. in several unverified sources, was born about 1780 in South Carolina or Ireland or Virginia (the latter according to his son, Starling G., in 1880). He married Ruth Elizabeth Blackstock about 1804. The evidence of his children’s births indicates that he lived successively in South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama, but he has not been found in any census record. He died about 1827 in Jackson Co., Alabama, having had four sons:

1. Richard Alexander Burgess (1805-1877) of Jackson Co., AL
*2. Starling G. Burgess (1813-1895) of Jackson Co., AL
3. Jonathan Milton Burgess (Jr.) (1817-1889) of Jackson Co., AL
4. William E. Burgess (1823- )

Second Branch: Starling G. Burgess

Starling G. Burgess was born about 1813 in Georgia. He married Sarah Martin about 1834. He registered 40 acres of public land in Alabama in 1837, and is listed in the 1840-80 censuses for Jackson Co., Alabama. He died there on 9 August 1895, having had eight sons:

1. John M. Burgess (1835-)
2. Coleman Burgess (1839- )
3. James Burgess (1842- )
4. William Burgess (1844-1870+) of Greene Co., GA

6. Richard S. Burgess (1848-1880+) of Red River Co., TX
7. David M. Burgess (1852- )
8. Samuel Burgess (1854- )

William Burgess is the ancestor of W. L. Burgess;
Richard S. Burgess is the ancestor of E. R. Burgess.

Test results received from two representatives in this line match each either; they have a common male ancestor, Starling G. Burgess. They do not currently match the numbers of any other Burgess line.
