He and his family emigrated from England to Dunedin, New Zealand on the ship Atrato between 10 February 1874 and 6 April 1874. He died at Green Island, Dunedin, New Zealand on 21 May 1906, having had four sons:

He died by strangling himself accidentally in a wooden fence on 4 August 1911 at Rockyside, Caversham, Dunedin, having had eight sons:

He married Annie Evelyn “Eva” Florence Swanson on 11 April 1918 at Masterton, New Zealand. He worked as a horse jockey and trainer most of his life at Wellington, New Zealand. He died on 6 May 1960 at Malvern, Bourke Co., Melbourne, Australia, having had one son.
Benjamin Burgess II is the ancestor of R. M. McCarty.
