He married Martha Blackford in 1841 at Warwick, Warwickshire Co. He is listed in the 1851-71 censuses for Kenilworth, Warwickshire Co., England. He and his family emigrated from England to Dunedin, New Zealand on the ship Atrato between 10 February 1874 and 6 April 1874. He died at Green Island, Dunedin, New Zealand on 21 May 1906, having had four sons:

He emigrated to New Zealand with his father and family. He married Harriett Fletcher on 2 November 1873 at Bedworth, Warwickshire Co., England. He died by strangling himself accidentally in a wooden fence on 4 August 1911 at Rockyside, Caversham, Dunedin, having had eight sons:

Benjamin Burgess II, also called “Snow” Burgess, was born on 13 February 1890 at Green Island, Dunedin, New Zealand. He married Annie Evelyn “Eva” Florence Swanson on 11 April 1918 at Masterton, New Zealand. He worked as a horse jockey and trainer most of his life at Wellington, New Zealand. He died on 6 May 1960 at Malvern, Bourke Co., Melbourne, Australia, having had one son.

Benjamin Burgess II is the ancestor of R. M. McCarty.
