PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LISTS

Note: in 1784 and 1798 the lists record: number of tithables, slaves over the age of 16, and horses; in 1796 they record slaves and horses; from 1806-14 they record: number of tithables, slaves over the age of 16, slaves under the age of 16, and horses; in 1815 they record: white males over the age of 16, slaves over the age of 16, slaves aged 9-12, slaves aged 12-16, and horses; in 1816 and from 1832-33 they record: white males over the age of 16, slaves over the age of 12, and horses; from 1817-20, 1823-24, 1826-32, and 1841-50 they record: white male tithables, slaves over the age of 16, slaves aged 12-16, and horses; from 1821-22 and in 1835 they record: slaves over the age of 12 and horses; in 1825 and from 1832-34 they record: white male tithables, slaves over the age of 12, and horses. Zeros straight across indicate no taxable personal property and no tithables (a minor or female as head of household). There were separate land tax rolls to record the taxation of real property. The levy of 1808 was never taken. The county was split into two districts. The numbering of these districts was not consistent from year to year.
