BURGESSES IN THE
1810 VIRGINIA CENSUS
Note: The 1810 census listed the following information: head of household, number of free males in household (first five numbers), number of free females in household (second five numbers), number of other free persons, number of slaves. The five age categories for male and female residents were as follows:
Under 10 * 10-15 * 16-25 * 26-44 * 45 and Older
The 1810 Virginia census is missing the following counties: Cabell, Grayson, Greenbrier, Halifax, Hardy, Henry, James City, King William, Lee, Louisa, Mecklenburg, Nansemond, Northampton, Orange, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Russell, Tazewell. Some of these counties (Orange, for example) are known to have had Burgess families living there at this time. In addition, the one Burgess family (Edward Burgess) living in Kanawha County at this time was apparently missed by the census taker.

In 1971 Netti Schreiner-Yantis published A Supplement to the 1810 Census of Virginia, in which she abstracted the personal property tax lists for those Virginia counties whose federal census records for 1810 had been lost. These records record, in this order, white titables, slaves over the age of twelve, and horses.
