BURGESSES IN THE 1790
PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX
LISTS OF VIRGINIA
The Virginia personal property tax lists, beginning in 1782, recorded all adult free males (and some female heads of household) who were obligated to pay a poll tax. In essence, they constituted a statewide census of adult men for most of the years that they were conducted. Stephen and Yvonne Binns have scanned the 1790, 1800, and some 1810 Virginia personal property tax lists, including counties that now are part of Kentucky and West Virginia, and posted them on their website:

Michael Burgess has abstracted all of the Burgess names mentioned therein, with some supplemental research by Mary Ann Kaucher. The lists usually record, in the following order: the number of white names over the age of 16, the number of slaves over the age of 16, the number of slaves under the age of 16, and the number of horses. “No data” indicates that the county has not yet been researched.
