PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LISTS

Note: the Colonial tax lists of Surry County list the  individual charged with the tithe plus any white males living with him. The first 1782 list records the number of white males and number of slaves; the second records number of tithables over 21, number of slaves 16 and older, slaves under 16, horses, and cattle. The 1784 dwellings list records the total of whites, number of dwellings, and number of other buildings. In 1788 the list records slaves 16 and older, slaves under 16, and horses. Beginning in 1789 the lists record:  number of white males over the age of 16, slaves over the age of 16, slaves under the age of 16, and horses. Beginning in 1812 the lists record: white tithables, slaves aged 12-16, slaves over the age of 16, and horses. In 1815 the list gives: white tithables, slaves aged 9-12, slaves over the age of 12, horses, and cattle. Beginning in 1816 the lists record: whites over the age of 16, slaves over the age of 12, and horses. The land tax lists record the number of acres charged to each owner.
