BURGESSES IN THE
VIRGINIA 1790 CENSUS SUBSTITUTE:
VIRGINIA TAX PAYERS, 1782-1787

Note:  The 1790 census for Virginia was lost 1812 during the British occupation of Washington, DC.  In 1908, when the first census was officially published by the Government Printing Office, personal property tax lists compiled during the 1780s by 39 counties and the City of Richmond in Virginia were put together as a substitute census; the records of 41 counties were missing.  However, the tax records of 35 additional Virginia counties were added in 1940 by Augusta B. Fothergill and John Mark Naugle.  Only those counties containing individuals named Burgess are listed below.  The tax lists typically record:  the number of tithes/polls or the total number of white residents (first digit; starred for total residents) and the number of slaves (second digit).  In 1784-1785 the three digits record:  whites, dwellings, and other buildings (double starred).  Some counties have more than one entry.

For a more comprehensive list of all adult male Virginia taxpayers in 1790 and 1800, see the Tax Records section under the Virginia 1790 and 1800 Personal Property Tax Lists.
