SMYTH COUNTY, VIRGINIA
PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LISTS

Note: the lists record: white males over the age of 16, slaves over the age of 16, slaves aged 12-16, and horses. Zeros straight across indicate no taxable personal property and no tithables (a minor or female as head of household, or a minister, or some other exempt category). There were separate land tax rolls to record the taxation of real property. The county was split into two districts; the numbering of these districts was not consistent from year to year, and in fact the Burgesses recorded here were actually recorded in the same area. The lists begin with the founding of Smyth Co. in 1832.
