PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LISTS

Note:  in 1782 the numbers indicate:  number of white males, slaves, horses, and cattle.  In 1783 the lists record:  tithables, white males over the age of 21, slaves over the age of 21, slaves aged 16-21, slaves under the age of ten, horses, and cattle.  From 1784-86 they record:  person charged with the tax, white males over the age of 21, white males aged 16-21, slaves over the age of 16, slaves under the age of 16, horses, and cattle.  In 1787 the names of the tithables are actually listed before the numbers.  In 1788 the list records:  white males over the age of 16, slaves over the age of 16, slaves  aged 12-16, physicians, and horses.  Between 1789-1814 they record:  white males over the age of 16, slaves over the age of 16, slaves aged 12-16, and horses.  In 1815 the list changes the age demarkable for slaves to age 12, and adds cattle.  From 1816-19 the lists record:  white males, slaves over the age of 12, and horses.  In 1820 the list records:  white males, slaves over the age of 16, slaves under the age of 16, and horses.  From 1821-28 the lists record:  slaves over the age of 12, and horses.  From 1829-30 they record:  white males, slaves over the age of 16, slaves aged 12-16, and horses.  Zeros straight across indicate no taxable personal property and no tithables (a minor or female as head of household, or a minister, or some other exempt category).  There were separate land tax rolls to record the taxation of real property.  The levy of 1808 was never taken.  The county was split into two districts for a few years in the 1780s.  The numbering of these districts was not consistent from year to year.  Woody Burge is included here because some members of this family are known to have used the name Burgess in later years.
